People are individuals, and the difficulties they experience don't always point towards one straightforward explanation.
Some people assessed for dyslexia may also experience difficulties with maths, handwriting, attention, memory, processing or other areas of learning.
Understanding the wider picture is important when deciding what support may be appropriate.
Dyslexia and dyscalculia
Dyscalculia is associated with significant and persistent difficulties involving maths and numbers.
Suzanne's team may consider further assessment where somebody experiences severe mathematical difficulties, frequently transposes numbers or continues to struggle substantially despite considerable effort.
Our educational psychologist assessments can consider dyscalculia alongside dyslexia and dysgraphia.
Dyslexia and dysgraphia
Dysgraphia can involve significant difficulties with written production.
Possible indicators can include very slow handwriting, difficulty producing legible writing, difficulties holding or controlling a pen or pencil, and problems translating thoughts into written work.
Dyslexia, ADHD and autism
Some of the difficulties described by parents and adults can overlap with characteristics associated with other neurodevelopmental differences.
Dyslexia West Midlands does not use a dyslexia or learning assessment to diagnose ADHD or autism.
Where an assessment or initial discussion indicates that another neurodevelopmental need may warrant further investigation, the team can recommend seeking appropriate specialist advice or signpost towards a relevant pathway.

When you don't know what's causing the difficulty
This is one reason our Learning Assessments can be particularly useful for younger children.
They provide baseline information across several areas of learning without assuming from the outset that dyslexia is necessarily the explanation.
Where significant dyslexic traits or other areas of concern are identified, we can then discuss appropriate next steps.
